Commercial Sites Book Reviews

  • Both Amazon and Barnes and Noble frequently include reviews from a variety of respected review journals, including Publisher's Weekly, School Library Journal, Booklist and Kirkus. Keep in mind however that these are commercial sites, so negative reviews or negative portions of reviews are not likely to be included.

  • Book Review Index Online

    Indexes more than 5 million book review articles from thousands of publications, including many children's book review journals. You can locate book reviews by key words, book title, author, journal name, etc. To narrow your search to children's literature, you can restrict the "reading level of book" to either "children's review" or "young adult review."

Software and App Reviews

  • YALSA App of the Week

    Maintained by members of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) division of the American Library Association, this series on the YALSA blog highlights apps that librarians working with teens may wish to incorporate into their public or school library environments. Many of the apps are useful in academic settings, while others are just for fun. Reviews include price and device requirements. This annual publication presents significant passages from current published criticism of both contemporary and older works for children. 2010 and later issues available through electronic access only.

Day, Serenna F. Horn Book Index, 1924-1989. Phoenix, Arizona: Oryx Press, 1990.

This accumulation of Horn Book Magazine's annual indexes from 1924 through 1989 allows access by title, author, illustrator, and subject for "key figures and works of children's literature." The 80,000 references have been standardized and cross-referenced.

Sutherland, Zena. The Best in Children's Books: The University of Chicago Guide to Children's Literature, 1985-1990. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1991.

Sutherland's books are collections of reviews originally published in the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books. The volumes include publisher addresses and six different indexes.
